Sumire moves to a new city hoping to find a boyfriend in the town where her parents first fell in love with each other. It is December 31st, the last day of the year. Sumire goes out for a walk in the snow and meets a strange boy who looks like he is trying to run away from home. He jumps off a wall right above of her. Their enocounter is short, but long enough for him to tell her that he thought girls like her were extinct.
Still puzzled, she goes to her new school wondering if she will be able to find a boyfriend. The image of the boy from before pops into her mind. She then finds a boy lying in the snow. Worried, she calls an ambulance and covers him with her coat. He is the same boy from before, Miyamoto Kaduki. When he opens his eyes, he greets her and tells her that she is a rare animal. They spend some time together and he buys her a hair pin telling her she looks beautiful wearing it.
They are interrupted by a couple of women who ask him if he will join the New Year's first worship. Sumire keeps wondering what dance are they talking about. He then tells one of the women that she looks good with the hairpin on. Sumire is disappointed and goes home.
Sumire looks upset, so her mother tells her to resolve whatever is bothering her within the year. Sumire decides to go to Kaduki's house to give the hairpin back to him. She pushes the door of the house from which she saw him escaping that day and finds Kaduki performing a traditional dance with a fan. It's 0:00 a.m. January 1st. Now she can't escape.
